Voter requirement checklist

____ U.S. citizen

____ at least 18 years of age by date of general election (Nov 4, 2008)

____ lived at current residence for at least 30 days by date of general election

____ not convicted felon, OR if felon, you have completed probation / parole (see Guide on ex-felon's rights)


Voter registration forms can be used to:

  • apply to register to vote
  • report a change of party affiliation
  • report a change of address
  • report a name change
  • report a change in other information


Accepted forms* of voter identification:

  • NC driver's license
  • utility bill (telephone, electric, gas, cable, water, sewage)
  • student photo ID along with a document from the school showing current address
  • paycheck or W-2; bank statement
  • US government-issued ID or document (passport, military ID, certified documentation of naturalization, vehicle registration)


* These forms of identification must display an individual’s current address in Durham County.

If I miss the regular voter registration period (before Oct 10), what can I do?
You can register AND vote early at the One-Stop voting locations.   You must bring with you valid identification (see above) showing your current address in Durham County.  

What is early voting?
Early voting allows voters to vote at selected sites before election day.  ALL voters have the option to vote early.  The ballots will not be counted until election night.

Who can use it?
Anyone, you do not need an excuse to vote early.

When can I vote early?
Early voting polls will open EVERY DAY from Oct 16-Nov 1 as follows:

Thurs, Oct 16 - Fri, Oct 17 9am-5:30pm
Sat, Oct 18 9am-3pm
Sun, Oct 19 12pm-3pm
Mon, Oct 20 - Sat, Oct 25 9am-5:30pm
Sun, Oct 26 12pm-5:30pm
Mon, Oct 27 - Wed, Oct 29 9-5:30pm
Thurs, Oct 30 - Fri, Oct 31 9am-7pm
Sat, Nov 1 9am-1pm

If you use one-stop early voting
Your vote is cast, do not go to the polls on Nov 4th.

Absentee ballot
If you will be out of town on Nov 4th, you could also use an Absentee Ballot.   You can send the Board of Elections a written request for an absentee ballot from Sept 15 to Oct 28.   Absentee ballot must be received by the Board of Elections by November 3rd (5pm).

    Consider doing the "OBAMA-STRAIGHT-FLIP" when voting:



    1) Vote for Obama

    2) Vote the straight Democratic ticket

    3) Flip the ballot and vote for the Democratic judges on the reverse side

    Request for absentee ballot by mail:   Sep 15 - Oct 28
    Last day to register during regular voter registration period:   Oct 10 (5pm)
    One-stop early voting (and registration):   Oct 16 - Nov 1
    Mail-in absentee ballot must be received by:   Nov 3 (5pm)
    General election:   Nov 4 (6:30am - 7:30pm)
